From the time Solomon E. Across 40th Street from the Key Realty Co. were the offices of realtor Richard J. Montgomery (born 1863), who is credited with opening up to development 40th Street and streets to the north (41st, 42nd, 45th, Rich, and Webster streets) following the annexation of Temescal by the City of Oakland in 1897. Francis Marion Borax Smith and Frank Haven s Realty Syndicate, whose property holdings circa 1900 in Oakland were vast, included several large sections in Temescal.
