Context:
Ayala Park, located between Telegraph Avenue and Shattuck Avenue, and from about 56th Street north to 58th Street, was likely created by Manuel Ayala, whose stately Victorian was slightly to the south on the west side of Telegraph Avenue. The pastoral pleasure park operated in the 1880s and 1890s, eventually becoming the site of Idora Park, which opened in 1904. Encarnación Galindo Peralta married Ayala after her husband, José Vicente Peralta (1812-1871) died. Vicente, who had settled on his father s 1821 Spanish land grant, and Encarnación, were the first persons of European descent to reside in what we now know as North Oakland. Their adobe, chapel, and, later, Victorian residence extended from the northeast corner of Telegraph Avenue and 55th Street. The mansion of Incarnación s brother, Francisco Galindo (1824-1890), was next door to his sister s, immediately to the north. The name Ayala persists to day in the short street, Ayala Avenue, that runs between Telegraph and Claremont avenues.
