Lake Temescal outlet 2007


Description:
Outlet from Lake Temescal, at the north end of the dam, Oakland, Calif. From the outlet, water from Lake Temescal re-enters the Temescal Creek channel. From this point, almost entirely to where it reaches San Francisco Bay in Emeryville, Temescal Creek flows in an underground culvert. Upstream from Lake Temescal, much of Temescal Creek and its tributaries flow in their open creek beds.

Context:
In the late 1860s, hydrolic engineer, Anthony Chabot, chose this site, where Temescal Creek and one of its tributaries, Tunnel Branch, converge, to build an earthen dam. Lake Chabot (later renamed Lake Temescal when Chabot completed another dam project, on San Leandro Creek, named Lake Chabot) was completed in 1868.
