Context:
On Friday, March 23, 1962, President John F. Kennedy arrived at the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda to begin a three-day swing through California. Among those greeting him were California governor, Edmund G. Brown and Congressman George P. Miller. That day, President Kennedy spoke at the University of California s 94th Charter Day Ceremony, held at Memorial Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus and presided over by UC president Clark Kerr. Later that day, he visited the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Laboratory. President Kennedy s motorcade route from Alameda to the UC Berkeley campus passed through Oakland along Broadway, Telegraph Avenue and Shattuck Avenue.From a 1962 issue of Safeway News, the company magazine, which published the photo with caption: "Audience which greeted Kennedy at Memorial Stadium was largest he has ever addressed in person at one time (93,000), also a record for University."
