Context:
In the latter part of the 19th century, Temescal was the name used to refer not just to the small village that had grown up where Telegraph Road crossed Temescal Creek (today s 51st Street), but to the area extending north from the Oakland city line, at about 38th Street, to the Berkeley border, and from Broadway on the east, to the Emeryville border on the west. Broadway, extending north from Oakland s waterfront, was a key avenue established early in the city s development. In time, the street was extended further north it was known as New Broadway in the vicinity of today s Temescal and Rockridge districts continuing to just west of Lake Temescal. Streetcar service along this northern stretch of Broadway continued along College Avenue.
