Context:
In 1922, Frederick Meyer, founder of what originally was known as the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts, purchased the Treadwell estate. After four years of major upgrades to the mansion, the school moved from Berkeley to its new campus. (In 1936, the school changed its name to the California College of Arts and Crafts CCAC, and, in 2003, changed it again, to the California College of the Arts CCA.) In 1977, the Treadwell mansion now called Macky Hall was both designated an Oakland City landmark and entered into the National Register of Historic Places. In 2016, CCA announced its intention to close its Oakland campus and move all school programs to its San Francisco campus.
