Context:
Sanborn Maps, published since 1866 by the Sanborn Map Company, depict the commercial and residential structures in US cities and towns. The maps initially were created to estimate fire insurance risks. The maps were published in bound volumes, with larger cities such as Oakland having multiple volumes. New volumes would be published periodically; in between volumes, to keep the maps current, updates consisting of drawings of new or altered buildings, lots, and streets were created and sent to client cities to be pasted on top of old maps.
