Context:
Driving through Temescal along Telegraph Avenue in 1950, one could have counted no fewer than ten gas stations, from 40th Street to 60th Street, making an average of one every two blocks. Along Telegraph, stations were located on: the NE corner of 41st Street; the SW corner of 45th Street; the NE corner of 45th Street; the SW corner of 46th and Shattuck Avenue; the SE corner of 49th Street; the SE corner of 56th Street; the SE corner of 58th Street; the SW corner of Aileen; the west side of Telegraph below 58th Street; and the NE corner of 60th Street. Today there is only one gas station on Telegraph, at the NE corner of 55th Street, and one on the SW corner of Shattuck Avenue and 52nd Street. Ground water contamination from these earlier gas stations, as well as from other light-industry businesses on Telegraph, has been common.
