Description:
View of the road where 51st and 52nd streets merge, approximately midway between Telegraph and Shattuck avenues (looking southeasterly), Temescal district, Oakland, Calif. Before the building of the Grove-Shafter Freeway (Highway 24) in the 1960s, both 51st and 52nd streets were standard, residential streets. In around 1971, the two streets were reconfigured and merged together at this point (with residences demolished in the process) to create a four-lane feeder to the new freeway. PG&E Substation D can be seen on the far side of the divided roadway.
