Temescal Pool 1949


Description:

Temescal Pool, located at 371 45th Street (looking southwest), Temescal district, Oakland, Calif. The nonprofit North Oakland Recreation Center Committee, spearheaded by Temescal attorney, Aldo Guidotti, and other North Oakland business and community leaders, conducted a fundraising campaign in the late 1940s to purchase the former Children's Home facility and adjacent boy's playground on 45th Street. from the Ladies Home Society and donate it to the city of Oakland for use as a recreation center and the site of a municipal swimming pool. The pool, also used by students at Oakland Technical High School, a half-block away, opened in 1949, and the recreation center opened a short time later, with the fledgling Studio One Art Program occupying a portion of the second floor.
