Context:
When lower Temescal was platted, the street grid shifted about 14 degrees between 41st Street and 42nd Street. Rich Street, only one block long and narrower than surrounding residential streets, filled the resulting gap. The street s mostly single-family bungalows were developed circa 1915, following the opening in 1913 of the Oakland Antioch and Eastern Railway s depot and rail yard at 40th Street and Shafter Avenue. Sometime after 1967, Rich Street was designated a one-way, originally from east to west but later changed to its current west-to-east orientation. This photograph was expressly taken to match the scene of an earlier photograph.
