Context:
Construction of Highway 24 (originally known as the Grove-Shafter Freeway) and BART through the Temescal and Rockridge districts began in the early 1960s with the demolition of hundreds of residences and dozens of commercial buildings along the right-of-way. Several shopping areas suffered as a result, including the once active Grove Street (now Martin Luther King Jr. Way) commercial district, which fell into decline following the leveling of a mile-long swath of mostly residences just east of Grove Street.
